Recent DNA testing of mitochondrial DNA confirm that Frances, along with Permelia Jane Thacker McKinnis Shiflett, and Ann Thacker Napper all descend from the same ancestress. This ancestress could mean that they have the same mother, or the same grandmother, or the same great grandmother or anyone in the female line back as much as 400 years. If she descends from slaves, my hunch is that it was many generations back. Her U3a1 mtDNA suggests her female line originally was Eurasian.

If you would like to discuss this more you can contact me at the email right below the information "The Why of this blog" in the right hand column. I am not ready to speculate in public, what my theories are of her parents. (But I would be glad to speculate in private!)

Thanks for posting. How fascinating.

My information is limited to their compiled military files, and what I have found in research.

What is most interesting about Ebenezer is that his brother Charles served in the 5th USCT (which was formed prior to the date when the federal government stipulated their could be colored troops.) Ebenezer and Charles had an eldest brother, Fountain who served in a white unit. In fact, I found information listing Fountain as white in the 1863 draft, though on his death he is listed as colored. He was born in Ohio, but I knew that his 'people' were from KY and TN. His last name was Reliford which is a common name in LA, but nearly everyone with that surname is black. There could be African American ancestry there somewhere, but I have no indication of a Louisiana connection.

I have no evidence that he could be from one of these 'tri-racial isolates,' only suspicions, due to Grandpa's year-round brown skin, high cheekbones and ice-blue eyes, which I read early on can be a characteristic.

I read this evening about 'Carmel Indians' moving from Eastern KY to Ohio, then ran across the 'Vinton Co. People' designation.

I know my ggrandparent's names, James Henry Reliford and Emma Barber, and they did live in Vinton Co. I haven't read through all of your posts, but I haven't seen their surname here.

(coincidentally, my mother's good friend in my hometown of Lancaster Ohio was a Thacker!)

Deb Whited
Lexington KYDeb Whttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09805188576444827531noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1980938469565908886.post-31983930619714408712012-04-28T18:50:36.784-04:002012-04-28T18:50:36.784-04:00Thanks, Laura! My first question is, how far back are you able to research your Thackers. I can safely go back to Nicholas Thacker's birth about 1818 in Louisa County, Virginia. I strongly suspect he is David Thacker and Sally Lemay's son. Which gets me back to 1790.

Terry SnyderTERRY SNYDERhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07196125204227954864noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1980938469565908886.post-36247911768749033232010-01-01T11:05:04.372-05:002010-01-01T11:05:04.372-05:00Hello Terry,

As you already know I accepted your tag, and I've added your blog to those that I follow. :)

Cindy, I was very heartened by your words, and I appreciate that you took the time to comment. I am enjoying researching this family.

Dera, I think you are quite correct that this is more common than many people realize. I don't know who she was, and I probably never will, but somewhere in my family tree there was one mother, who looked down at her newborn infant and saw a child who bore the markings of another race. I don't know what she was feeling at that moment. But many centuries later, I acknowledge the fact that she existed, as did her child, and that without them I do not exist today. For me, that is what matters most.

As for the Thackers, Nappers, Freemans, Dortons and Doles, they were a very clanish group, intermarrying within the group almost exclusively in the very beginning. I often wonder if this was because they were "outsiders" to both the white and the African American communities that existed at this time in Southern Ohio's history. Thank you Dera, for taking the time to comment.TERRY SNYDERhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07196125204227954864noreply@blogger.com
